Val di Rabbi is one of the most picturesque valleys in Trentino, characterized by a typically alpine landscape and an unpolluted natural environment, which is mostly protected by the Stelvio National Park. Rabbi is in fact a small jewel located among gentle slopes covered with conifer forests, which is the ideal habitat for many wild species such as deer, roedeer, foxes, and marmots. The peaks belonging to the Ortler Alps rise on the top. The valley includes green fields, small villages, and renovated chalets, which, together with rustic farmsteads and the innumerable mountain huts of the highest Alpine pastures, are the distinctive sign of a perfect union between men and mountains. Entirely crossed by the rushing waters of the Rabbies river and full of streams, waterfalls, and high-altitude lakes, the valley is known for its ferruginous mineral water, which has important therapeutic properties, thus qualifying the Spa of Rabbi, also visited by the Imperial Court of Austria in the past. The valley, which used to be completely wild, was slowly colonized in the Middle Ages by peasants who were looking for new lands and forests to exploit. With the passing of time, they developed a rural community that has transmitted knowledge, crafts, and traditions from generation to generation, while having shaped the surrounding landscape with the delicacy of a skilled artist.
Today, in a different socio-economic context, the inhabitants of the valley desire to protect their heritage in a modern way and without ignoring the needs of the contemporary age. They aim at a sustainable tourism that enhances the characteristic features of this place; there are many young people who in recent years have been ‘back to the earth’, dedicating themselves to the maintenance of greenery and the breeding of cows and sheep, as they have a passion not only for animals but also for the ancient traditions of the territory in which they live.
